Official XFL Phone App In-Depth Review, Good And Bad Points

The XFL’s official app for iOS and Android dropped this week, and I’ve been testing it out for the past couple of days. While we’re not getting fantasy support here, and fans will have to go to Alt Fantasy Sports for their leagues, this brings a lot to the table. This app helps center the XFL experience in one place where we can keep track of everything with a simple layout.

First, the app asks your favorite team, which brings up their homepage, schedule, roster and ticket portal in a tab. Their homepage is really useful for fans planning to attend games, and there’s info about parking, merch, concessions, and tailgating.

The schedule feature is great, because it not only shows you when and where the game is being played, it also shows each team’s record and where to watch the game (ESPN/FOX/ABC). This is the part I’m most excited about, and the biggest reason why is box scores.

Throughout the pre-season scrimmages, we had to scrap together tweets and highlight videos to figure outdrives, scoring and stats, but now they’ll all be right here on the app. Seriously, that’s a huge relief, especially for us media guys. No word on whether they’ll add compiled season stats moving forward, but I’m happy to see box scores here.

On the team page, it lists the roster alphabetically with general info about each player. Hopefully, teams will either add depth charts here or add a tab once they officially release them.

Outside the team page, there’s also a news tab that offers official league updates otherwise found on XFL.com, and leaguewide ticket & schedule tabs.

The tickets portal is great because it lists each team and links to their schedule. You can manage your tickets here, as well as buy single-and season passes.

Under the “More” tab, there are some more useful resources for fans, most notably an official rules section that breaks down the game’s new features into 3 easy to remember groups. First, there are five gameplay innovations, then five timing changes, and last, five common-sense rules. We’ve broken down the new rules on the site before, but it’s helpful to see them organized in this way.

There’s also a link to the XFL shop, where you can pick up jerseys, hats, or whatever merch your lil heart desires.

My one issue is that you can only have one favorite team, and the only way to view another team’s roster/schedule/stats is to change your favorite team each time, then change it back. It’s not a laborious process, we’re just using our thumbs here…but it’s a little wrinkle that will hopefully get ironed out over time.

Overall, this is a well designed and streamlined app that’ll help facilitate the fan experience, and I’d call it a must-have for anyone following the league. It showed right up in the iOS App Store on my girlfriend’s iPhone but didn’t pop up when I searched it in Google Play on my Pixel. While this will probably be fixed soon, Android users can take this link to download the app.
