LA Wildcats Mini-Camp Review And Takeaways, Who Is The Starting QB

When the LA Wildcats storm onto the field in February at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California they will be led by experienced Head Coach, Winston Moss. Although Moss has no experience as a head coach or even coordinator for that matter, Moss is filled with NFL experience.

Before being named the head coach for the XFL’s Wildcats Moss was Mike McCarthy’s right hand man during the dyantasy in Green Bay. He was the assistant head coach and also managed the linebackers from 2007-2018.

Moss has a tough task leading the Wildcats as it is the official relaunch for the XFL league. The first step that Moss has accomplished was leading the Wildcats through minicamp in Las Vegas. The biggest news to come out of the minicamp were the players who were waived; most notably, Shawn Oakman.

The reason for this move is unclear but Coach Moss had this to say:

“The LA Wildcats are all about supporting each other and winning a Championship. We made a collective and joint decision that it was best to move on.”

Oakman was projected to be drafted in the NFL back in 2016, but a case against him for sexual assault prevented teams from drafting him. In the beginning of 2019, Oakman was found not guilty.

Another storyline being followed throughout the minicamp, which was held at UNLV, was the quarterback situation. Back in October, the Wildcats were assigned, QB Luis Perez, former Division II standout and former quarterback of the Birmingham Iron of the AAF. It was presumed Perez would be the starter for the Wildcats come February but that changed when the Wildcats signed Josh Johnson in November.

After injuries to Alex Smith and Colt McCoy in December of 2018, Johnson started multiple games towards the end of the season for the Washington Redskins. The Detroit Lions attempted to sign Johson during this season but the XFL blocked that and would not allow Johnson to leave his contract with the Wildcats.

When asked about the QB situation, Coach Moss told Matthew Shapiro of XFL News Hub,

“We have 4 good quarterbacks all completing for the job and the job is wide open. We will announce our starting QB at a time TBD.”

Not only did the Wildcats have competition on the field during minicamp but they showed they can be a fun team as well:

All in all, the Wildcats should be a fun and exciting team to watch come February. The Wildcats kick off their season in Houston on February 8 to face the Houston Roughnecks at TDECU Stadium. You can catch that game on FOX.

on a side note…..I would love to see the Wildcats have more fans than the Chargers in Los Angeles. It would be the ultimate slap in the face to the NFL. Unlikely though as Los Angeles fans are atrocious in general and the Wildcats
probably should have gone to San Diego from the get go.
