XFL Video Game Possibilities Draw Near

For the past year-plus, the hype has been building about an eventual XFL game. Entertainment outlets like Onsmash.com, justpushstart.com, and sportsgamersonline.com have all hinted that it could happen in recent months, and today, we’ve received word that the XFL is in negotiations with a developer.

There have been rumors that 2K could revive its football games with the XFL. While we haven’t gotten details about which specific company is in the running, Oliver Luck and Vince McMahon have made it clear that they want to work with a major developer.

The game would likely come out in late 2020 or 2021, but all of this hinges on how the XFL performs this season. A game studio will only want to invest time and assets into creating a product if they’re sure there’s a sustained market for it. As the XFL is already partnered with ESPN, Fox Sports, and ABC, they are set up for success in the spring football market that the AAF proved fans were hungry for.

Given the timetable, an XFL game would likely come out on next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Running on new hardware, and developed by a potentially major studio, this game could have some serious graphics.

Madden fans are very loyal to their franchise (by necessity perhaps, it’s the only pro football game on the market), but there could be the real draw here. We all know the XFL’s new rules add exciting wrinkles to the game, and an XFL product would be a whole new experience for gamers. From the new kickoff rules to the running clock, little tweaks will change this game, but the thing I’m really excited about is the shootout.

The XFL’s alternative to standard overtime rules is set to be an exciting event to end a tie game. Offenses and defenses from both teams line up on each goal line and alternate plays to see who can score the most points for a win, and as wild as that will be in live game action, playing that out in online matches would be a blast as well.

We’ll keep you updated once more details come out, so stay tuned!

While he is engrossed with the X's and O's, the roster building and more, it has always been his goal to keep the players first in mind in coverage, showing the human aspect of this sport behind all the action on the field. With Dany Garcia and Dwayne The Rock Johnson now at the helm, he's excited to see all the opportunities that this league will create for players to showcase their talent and make their dreams come true.

Since there are only 8 teams, I would think you would need to think about two things: 1) Build your own XFL expansion team(s) 2) Expand your league to 16 teams in “Your version of XFL”. I’d also use the old XFL 2000 teams as unlocks people could get.

If it’s just 8 teams and that’s it, well I think I’ll pass. The players won’t matter much to people since you’re not playing as Aaron Rodgers, you’re playing as Landry Jones…not a real big selling point. People like the XFL for its ability to create a vision of football, I hope they get that.
