LA Wildcats QB Josh Johnson Cut by San Francisco 49ers

After signing with the San Francisco 49ers in November of 2020, Josh Johnson was released June 1st. Including Johnson, the 49ers had five quarterbacks and it looked as if Johnson was the odd man out. Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo obviously have their roster spots locked while Nate Sheffield and Josh Rosen are younger and have more recent NFL experience.

Johnson has been with 13 NFL teams but his most recent professional experience came with the XFL Wildcats. Johnson threw for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns in just four games. Johnson, 35, may have seen his last NFL action. The most likely scenario is for Johnson to sign somewhere as a backup and be a veteran presence.
