Week One Injury Report: Vipers at Guardians

Home opener graphic (via Twitter @XFLGuardians)

Just 24-hours before the New York Guardians and the Tampa Bay Vipers kickoff, we’ve received an update on injuries for players on both sides.

These aren’t players on injured reserve, rather active players dealing with an injury that leaves their status for the contest in question. Luckily, both teams are among the healthiest in the league when it comes to active players dealing with an injury.

The list gives the area of the injury, but not the exact injury, in addition, the list provides the practice status and has a column for game status as well. Since the Vipers and Guardians play on Sunday, no rulings have been made on players’ status as of yet, but Saturday games have already presented us with questionable, probable and out statuses for players.

The understanding is that Wednesday is the day an initial injury report comes out for Saturday games and Thursday is the day for Sunday games. Then, teams pass along an official status for gameday 24-hours beforehand.

Here’s the report:

Tampa Bay:

DeAndre Goolsby, Tight End

  • Neck Injury
  • Did not participate in practice

It was telling of Goolsby injury that he was going to miss some time when the team signed TE Pharoah McKever from ‘Team 9’ Thursday.

Jason Neil, Defensive End

  • Groin Injury
  • Limited participation in practice

Neil is a part of the Vipers defensive end group that is already missing Obum Gwacham. His limited status leaves reason to be optimistic for Sunday.

New York:

Keenan Brown, Tight End

  • Illness
  • Did not participate in practice

It’s wrong to speculate on the severity of an illness, but in the past, players have sat out most of the week with an illness and been ready to play Sunday. We’ll see what the case is for Brown.

Joe Horn, Wide Receiver

  • Ankle Injury
  • Limited participation in practice

The Guardians traded for Horn during training camp. They must have seen something in the 25-year-old legacy receiver, but there’s a possibility of caution early in the season could leave Horn out for week one.

Dejuan Neal, Cornerback

  • Thigh Injury
  • Full participant in practice

Neal will likely play on Sunday given his full participation status, and expectations is that he is either given the “Probable” tag or taken off the injury list completely before the game status of players is given.

The game kicks-off Sunday at 2 PM on Fox. As soon as official game status rulings are made, XFL News Hub will have them.
