The last time Steve Spurrier coached on a football field was March 30th, 2019 when his Orlando Apollos of the AAF took on the Memphis Express. The Apollos topped the Express 34 – 31.
Josh Kendall of the Athletic, spoke with the legendary former Florida Gators head coach. Who still wants to coach at 75 years old. This time it would be in a potentially rebooted XFL.
“If that XFL cranks back up, and they want me to take a team down in Florida, I would probably do it.”
Spoke with Steve Spurrier this week for a June story that I'll think you'll like. Unrelated to that topic but interesting: "If that XFL cranks back up, and they want me to take a team down in Florida, I would probably do it."— Josh Kendall (@JoshTheAthletic) May 29, 2020
Spurrier’s Orlando Apollos finished 7 – 1 and were the top team in the AAF before it folded. The Tampa Bay Vipers, before the league shut down, were reportedly eyeing a move to Orlando for the 2021 season.
The Marc Trestman lead Vipers were only 1 and 4 but looking much better heading into Week 6 with QB Taylor Cornelius at the helm. Spurrier would be a much bigger draw in Florida in a rebooted XFL.
A Steve Spurrier vs Bob Stoops battle or Spurrier vs June Jones would make for great football and television. We will find out more if the XFL will return in the coming months.
