Renegades QB Landry Jones Active Sunday, Phillip Nelsen To Start

After weeks of speculation as to the Renegades’ Landry Jones week one status with a minor knee injury, we’ve finally received official word. Jones will be on the active roster today’s game against the BattleHawks, but will be at 3rd on the depth chart while Phillip Nelsen starts and Eric Dungey backs him up.

Bob Stoops said “With limited reps in practice, we’ll enter the game with Landry listed as our No. 3 quarterback…We will reassess our quarterback situation on Monday but feel positive about his progress.”

It makes sense to ease him back into the lineup, as Nelsen has been getting all the first team reps in his absence, and they want to make sure their starting QB is fully up to speed after a full week of practice.

It’s also possible he’s not 100% quite yet, but it makes sense that Stoops would want him active for gameday. Nelsen and Dungey are young passers with a lot of upside, but if the Renegades find themselves in a bind, Jones could always take the field.

Phillip Nelsen performed well filling in through camp, and tossed two TD’s vs the Battlehawks in a preseason scrimmage victory.

Jones stated that a week two start was the “worst case scenario” for his knee, so we’ll most likely see him back in his role next week.
