DRAFT: After Round 1, Robinson Could Be Waiting A Bit Longer

The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is in the books. And while it was a good day for Offensive Linemen, Wide Receivers and Cornerbacks there were no safeties drafted on Thursday night.

The draft’s top safeties include Xavier McKinney from Alabama, Antoine Winfield Jr. from Minnesota and Grant Delpit from LSU. Those three players are among ESPN’s top-11 best available (McKinney 1, Winfield 6, Delpit 11).

There were a couple of surprises at the cornerback position in round one, as some players mocked to go in the second round were drafted on Thursday. The Atlanta Falcons drafted Clemson’s A.J. Terrell at 16. Terrell was slated as the 6th best corner on the board. Damon Arnette from Ohio State was drafted at 19 by the Las Vegas Raiders. Arnette was the 7th ranked corner in the class. In addition, 8th ranked CB prospect Noah Igbinoghene from Auburn was drafted 30th by the Miami Dolphins.

While secondary remains deep as the draft enters night two, Robinson is ranked by ESPN as the 14th best safety prospect. Some names that rank ahead of Robinson include small school standout Kyle Dugger from Lenoir-Rhyne and Clemson’s Tanner Muse.

While the position seems deep with talent, remember certain styles of safety only fit certain schemes in the National Football League. Robinson has shown potential as a centerfielder type of safety, in the XFL he was a very strong free safety that sat back and picked off poorly timed throws.

Depending on fit, Robinson could be the fourth or fifth best safety in the draft at doing what he does. And no matter what, Robinson will have a new team by Sunday morning at the latest when undrafted players begin signing contracts.
